Primarily a residential township, Rice Township hosts many natural resources including the historic "Ice Lakes" area, a pristine tract of approximately 300 acres holding two beautiful lakes. The "Beaver Pond" and "Patty Boyles Pond" are both located on Heslop Road and offer a natural habitat and scenic views. While Boyles Pond is maintained by a private group which limits access to members, the Beaver Pond and its 700 surrounding acres have recently been deeded to the Commonwealth's Game Commission for preservation in its present state.
To the southeast lies Blytheburm Lake, a privately owned lake ringed with homes, many of which served originally as summer residences. Formerly under the control of the Blytheburn Association, this area boasts a number of beautiful pre-Victroian homes which were accessible during the 1800's via an electric Rail Road which ran from Hazleton to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. --More about that later.--
The Township is part of the crucial Wapwallopen Watershed which feeds water from the Penobscot Mountains down through Hollenback Township, ulimately emptying into the Susquehanna River. The Little Wapwallopen trickles from Boyles Pond to the Beaver Pond, collects runoff from the Ice Lakes and makes its way on through Dorrance. The Big Wapwallopen Creek, a protected Trout Stream, forms Rice Township's southeastern border with Wright Township. |
